Kumazawa, Banzan
(1619-1691)
   An influential Confucian scholar of the early Tokugawa period, and a disciple of Nakae, Toju. He is significant in 'Shinto' history because he developed Oyomei ethical thought, much of which was incorporated in later Shinto teachings, and he attracted students associated with the imperial court and criticised the shogunate in his Confucian writings, thus encouraging the pro-imperial movement. For this he was arrested in 1669 and eventually confined to ibaraki prefecture where he died twenty-two years later.
