Toyotomi, Hideyoshi

Toyotomi, Hideyoshi
(1536-1598)
The second of the three great unifiers of Japan, he took over from his commander Oda, Nobunaga (1534-1582) and was in turn succeeded by the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu. Hideyoshi's funeral was conducted by the Yoshida school (see Yui-itsu Shinto). He is enshrined as a kami in several places including the large yatsu-mune style Kyoto hokoku jinja (hokoku 'wealth of the nation', was a name adopted by Hideyoshi), in Toyokuni jinja in Kanazawa, Kyoto and Tokyo, and in three post-Meiji shrines.
