Kogo-shui

Kogo-shui
'Gleanings of Ancient Words'. A book of commentary on 'ancient' words and practices compiled by Imbe, Hironari and presented to the Emperor Heizai in 807. It was written to substantiate at court the status of the Imbe against the claims of the rival Nakatomi clan, and includes passages which supplement the mythological and historical accounts in the Kojiki and Nihongi completed a hundred years earlier. There is an English translation by Kato and Hoshino (1925).
