- Ujiko-shirabe
- Shrine registration, lit. 'checking of ujiko'. Instituted with limited success early in the Meiji era to replace the Buddhist tera-uke system. One became an ujiko by receiving at birth a talisman from a local shrine, to be returned at death. Moving house meant reregistering at a nearby shrine. All households were expected in addition to enshrine in the kamidana a talisman representing the bunrei (divided spirit) of the Ise shrine.See Taima.
